Perfection is not possible. Excellence, however, is excellent.

Once you've chosen your niche and forum software package, there are still some decisions to make - not the look and feel but how to run it.

For books on it see:

Among the decisions you need to make
  • How diificult do you want registration to be? You can make registration by invitation only - they contact you and you register them - all the way to open registration with no checking to make sure the new members aren't spambots (and everything in between).
  • What sections of your forum will be open to guest viewing - all posts? The member list? Selected sections just for members. Selected sections for members of a certain level or group?
  • How do you define spammers and trolls? What level of interpersonal disrespect or off-topic discussion can you tolerate?
Some admins draw the line at disrespect that moves into libel, slander, and hate crime. Others are less tolerant. Some tolerate discussions that go far-afield of the original posting, other's insist that discussions stay strictly on-topic.
Some admins dislike and disallow single word responses to posts. Others don't mind so long as the response make sense in context.

It all depends on your comfort level as an admin. Decide early so you can nip problems in the bud.
